Brakes

A paraphrase of their best known single by the Brighton four-piece, formed by members of British Sea Power and The Electric Soft Parade, gives this blog its name, because All Night Disco Party is an immensely addictive track, and at 2:43, is one of the longer tracks from their 29 minute debut Give Blood, with a quarter of the album's tracks being less than a minute. This is fast-paced alt rock, with some hints of country music at times. All Night Disco Party is below.

The Curitiba-based funk carioca group, best friends with fellow Brazilians CSS, are a four-piece (originally a three-piece, but vocalist Marina Vello quit after their debut album With Lasers was released) best known for their fun attitude and catchy tunes. The excellent Solta O Frango is below.

I'd have to say that personally, not discovering my favourite four piece would mean that I wouldn't have found out about one of the more influential and long-lasting groups to emerge from the mid 90s Britpop phenomenon. Over their long and illustrious career, from the shoegaze-esque Leisure, right through their Britpop heydays with the criminally undersold Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife and The Great Escape to the more alt rock offering that was their self-titled, and the experimental albums 13 and Think Tank, they've proved that they're not just stuck in one genre. After the release of Fool's Day to support Record Store Day 2010, it's clear that something new will be along sometime soon. Country House, the #1 hit from their middle album The Great Escape, is below, and the downloads are sorted by year as just listing them would be too confusing.

Bloc Party

One of the more popular indie rock groups of the 00s, the London four-piece have drastically changed their style over their career. From the big hitting debut of Silent Alarm, to the darker and more melancholic A Weekend In The City, and the dance-orientatied move for their latest and possibly last album Intimacy, there's a large back catalogue with some great hidden gems: for example, England from the first The Prayer 7", and The Once And Future King from the Flux 7". The Pioneers, one of the more powerful Silent Alarm tracks, is below.

The insanely positive Florida five-piece are best known for their debut single I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You, but their first album, Partie Traumatic, isn't 10 copies of this track. Rather, it's sometimes a bit downbeat (especially on I'm Making Eyes At You), but on such tracks as the title track, it is standard twee pop. A fine, fun album. INGTYBHTDWY is below.
